Back in 1954 two hurricanes slammed the eastern seaboard. Maine was one of the hardest hit states with millions of dollars in damage.

The first hurricane was named Carol and it hit Maine in August of '54. It started in the Atlantic ocean and strengthened as it made landfall. Carol took 3 lives and destroyed apple and corn crops. It also caused more than 10 million dollars in damage.

After Carol rolled out the clean up began. Until 10 days later when hurricane Edna hit Maine. Edna pounded the state causing 15 million dollars in damages, completely wiped out roads as well as miles of railroad tracks.

Check out this rare video of Portland and other affected towns from Northeast Historical Film in 1954 during the storms. You can already see some flooding as Mainers try to go about their daily lives.
