Sadly, fires kill more Americans every year than all natural disasters combined. On average 7 people die every day from a house fire, 36 are injured and they cause 7 billion in property damage - every year.

The Red Cross has 4 things you can do right now to save your life:

  • Check Your Smoke Detectors:   A working smoke detector reduces your chances of dying in a fire by nearly half. Smoke detectors have an average of a 10 year life.
  • Have an Escape Plan:  You only have 2 minutes to escape a burning house. An escape plan can save you valuable time.
  • Prevent a Fire in Your Home:  You may have several hazards that you are unaware of. Check the Fire Safety List.
  • Get Your Kids Involved:  If your child's school doesn't have a fire prevention, contact your local Red Cross chapter.

The tragic fatal fire in Portland that took 5 lives has made us all examine if our homes are safe. Please take these simple steps to stay alive should a fire ever happen in your home.

Portland comedian Juston McKinney will be at the State Theater on Friday. As he was getting ready for his show, he decided to give all the proceeds to the victims and survivors of the Noyes fire. He felt he had to do something to help people in his own backyard.
