I have lived in Maine all my life. When I was a kid, I loved winter. Building forts, throwing snowballs, sledding down big hills. As adult though, winter is my worst enemy. Here are 5 things I hate about winter in Maine.

1. It Can Kill You

Where else do you have to worry about things falling out of the sky and landing on your head killing you? I'm just trying to walk to work!

2. Ice That Never Seems to Melt

No matter how hard you try there's always that patch of ice that sticks around after clean up from a snowstorm, just waiting for some unsuspecting person to walk through it thinking it's just a slushy mess when it's really a death trap that will send you hurtling toward the ground in an instant.

3. Driving

Ever had to drive in the snow? It sucks. 4-wheel drive helps, but as soon as you hit that black ice there's nothing that can stop you from spinning out of control into a guardrail. Even if you are a very cautious driver, you have to look out for all those drivers that aren't. The worst is travelling at 40mph on the highway safely while that 18-wheeler flies by you in the passing lane doing 70 as dumping so much snow on your windshield that you have to crank down you window and look out it to see while your wipers whine to get it cleared. Thanks a lot buddy!

4. Glaring Sun

In the winter, every surface is reflective. When that late day sun hits it you feel like your eyes and melting. Also, late day sun at 3PM is wrong. I have no idea how people in Alaska have not lost their minds.

5. Jammed Up Wheel Wells

Make sure to clear these out before they turn into a solid rock. Of course you'll need to clean them out every time you get out of your car all winter long, and that doesn't get annoying at all!

So you're saying to yourself, "If you don't like winter in Maine, move!" It's the rallying cry of the Mainers who love snow. There's nothing wrong with loving snow and I get all the benefits to the state from winter activities, but I don't have to like it nor do I have to move because of it. I love the three other seasons. I also have family here and refuse to leave them. I'm a Mainer born and raised, but if there was a way skip over winter each year, I would live in the best place in the world.
