After seeing all the tributes to Robin Williams on TV showcasing some of his best work in films, I really have the urge to have a Robin Williams filmfest, but I'm cheap. So I turned to Netflix. You won't find everything he did, but Netflix has six movies that he stars in that you can watch right now and most of them are pretty good. I'll save you the trouble of searching and show you the list in no particular order.

  • The World's Greatest Dad

    2009

    Rotten Tomatoes Rating: 89%

I haven't seen this movie, but it's written and directed by Bobcat Goldthwait so that's a plus in my book.

Robin plays Lance Clayton, a father who always wanted to be a successful writer but is just a high school poetry teacher. His son wants nothing to do with him and is secretly dating the high school art teacher. I watched the trailer and it looks great. It's a dark comedy though, so if your type of humor is along the lines of 'The Hangover', this might not be for you.

  • The Fisher King

    1991

    Rotten Tomatoes Rating: 84%

"Radio personality turns screwball on mission from God." I can kind of relate.

Robin plays a deranged homeless man who meets a despondent radio DJ played by Jeff Bridges. The two go off on a quest to find the holy grail. It's the kind of role Robin plays so well because it seems to me most like his comic persona.

Be warned. The movie's plot involves suicide, but it's a great flick.

  • Popeye

    1980

    Rotten Tomatoes Rating: 57%

I remember when it was announced that Robin Williams would be playing Popeye. He had done impressions of Popeye in his stand up routine so it seemed like a good fit.

My favorite scene is when Olive Oyl's family is at the dinner table chatting away and Popeye tries to find a place to squeeze his chair in.

It's not a great movie, but it's certainly no 'RV.'

  • Hook

    1991

    Rotten Tomatoes Rating: 31%

Ah yes. 'Hook.' Can you believe when this movie came out I had never seen Peter Pan? Can you believe I still haven't?

This is one of those movies that critics hate and the general public loves. On Rotten Tomatoes critics rate it at 31% while the audience rating is 76%.

The story of what happens when Peter Pan grows up and goes back to Never Never Land is boring to me, but Dustin Hoffman wearing platform shoes to play Hook. Now that's the next best getup after dressing like a woman in 'Tootsie.'

  • Jumanji

    1995

    Rotten Tomatoes Rating: 50%

Here's another one that wasn't for me, but if you had young kids 10 years ago, they probably watched 'Jumaji' more times than you can count.

A board game comes to life and animals terrorize the real world. A little too much like 'Jurassic Park' to me.

One interesting note. Part of the movie was filmed in North Berwick and while Robin was there he spent time greeting his fans and signing autographs.

  • The Birdcage

    1996

    Rotten Tomatoes Rating: 79%

In my opinion this is the best of the bunch on Netflix, and one of Robin's all time best films.

It's an epic cast with Robin playing off Gene Hackman brilliantly. Hank Azaria and Nathan Lane are amazing too.

The plot revolves around Robin's character trying to hide his homosexuality from his son's soon to be father-in-law who happens to be a conservative US Senator. Robin shines in this role. It's a must see.
