Before his worldwide success and vast library of creepy literary masterpieces, Stephen King was known as Steve King, and he was a writer for the Maine Campus. The Maine Campus is the University of Maine at Orono's student newspaper.

Steve King wrote a column in the late 60s called King's Garbage Truck. According to a book titled Haunted Heart: The Life and Times of Stephen King by Lisa Rogak, the column was given that moniker because in King's words, "You never know what you'll find in the garbage truck."

The Maine Campus recently posted an article from the 1970s about Stephen King's first big break in the literary world.

A former columnist for the Maine Campus and an UMO graduate made his debut on the big-money literary scene, the Campus learned last week.

Stephen King is probably making a little more money than his first $2500 plus royalties payday for Carrie.
