Dear Person-Who-Dented-My-Car-Door,

I know parking in Portland sucks. Spaces are close together and we're all in a hurry to get somewhere. That said, I'm very careful opening my door when I'm parked next to someone.

I recently bought a new car. I like it very much. In my 30 years of driving, it's the first car that I've had that felt like an adult car. It has all the features I've wanted in a car and I like the way it looks.

When we buy nice things, we want to keep them looking nice, especially when we haven't even made our first payment on said nice thing. It's very disappointing to go browsing through the electronics section at Target looking at things you can't buy because you haven't made that first payment yet, while your girlfriend goes to grab a few things, then return to your car to see a ding that looks like someone threw a baseball at it.

When you opened your door, and I'm pretty sure it was your door since it's at just the right level for it, did you stop for a moment to think about the car next to you and how kicking your door wide open quickly might do some damage to it and maybe even your vehicle too?

Look, I don't want to be this guy. I don't want dings either, but sometimes it just frustrates you so much that you can understand him.

I also understand accidents happen. That's why we have to have car insurance in Maine. A simple note on the windshield with your name and phone number would allow me to contact you so we can exchange insurance information and get this taken care of in the manner it should be.

In this case I have no other recourse then the write this letter and hope you see it and can be more considerate next time. If there is a next time, just come find me in the electronics section of Target. I'll be the one looking at the complete Star Wars collection on Blu-Ray thinking about writing an open letter to George Lucas asking him why he made Greedo shoot first.
