People come from all over the globe to get a higher education at one of Maine's most prestigious institutions, Bates College. They drive in cars, they fly in planes, they come by train or by foot to Lewiston because of Bates long-standing and well-earned reputation. But what if they could travel underground?

There's been a long-standing myth amongst Bates College students and Lewiston locals that there is a series of tunnels that exist beneath the pristine campus that is a crown jewel of the city. Rumors have swirled for decades about an elaborate tunnel system that connect libraries, dormitories and even the Bates campus to a local 24-hour convenience store for those late night cram sessions. But is it true? Well one former reporter for The Bates Student says yes.

Teddy Rube, a staff writer for The Bates Student during his collegiate days, decided to investigate whether or not a secret tunnel existed between Bates libraries. It could be possible because Bates had an explosion of construction during a period when bomb shelters were commonplace due to ongoing wars the United States was involved in. Rube details his discovery here, and it's absolutely worth the time if you're a Bates student or Lewiston native.

But if you're just curious how this ends...SPOILER ALERT...there's a VERY good chance some underground tunnels exist on the Bates campus. In the bowels of the Ladd library lay a sanctuary of old doors, some of which remain locked, and likely have the full truth laying behind them. Rube didn't have his questions fully answered, nor did he dispel any myths either.
