Best and Worst States for Summer Road Trips

On the 5th of July (Sunday) there was a 17 mile backup on the Turnpike. It took 3 hours to get from Ogunquit to the Hampton tolls! 85% of us plan to getaway this summer. 90% by car! When you pack up the car and head out, where should you go and where should you avoid? 

Using 20 different catagories, WalletHub compared the 50 U.S. states to figure out which ones were the cheapest to travel for the most fun. Some of the things they based it on was average gas prices, the quality of roads and the number of attractions.

Maine landed pretty much smack in the middle (#28). We did have some of the least car thefts, but some of the most expensive camping.

TOP 5 BEST STATES FOR SUMMER ROAD TRIPS:

• Oregon

• Nevada. Nevada has six times more nightlife options per 100,000 residents than New Jersey. Duh.

• Minnesota

• Washington.

• Ohio

BOTTOM 5 STATES FOR SUMMER ROAD TRIPS:

• New Jersey. They have one of the highest cost for car repairs.

• Michigan - even though they had one of the lowest averages for auto repair.

• Rhode Island - like Maine, it has one of the highest costs to camp, but also has most National Parks per square mile. Go figure.

• Arkansas - despite having some of the lowest gas prices.

• Oklahoma - one of the highest car thefts per capita in the US.
