Once a tall part of the Portland skyline, this building in Portland is gone today and most of the area around it has been completely transformed. Do you know what this building is and where it used to stand?

The above photo was shot in 1967 and the area this building was in looks totally different today. Here's a shot from Google Street view from about the same place as the above picture was taken.

The large building that was torn down in 1974, four years after an identical one burned down, is a grain elevator on the old Grand Trunk Railroad line. The picture was taken at the corner of Fore and India streets and the elevator stood where along the water where the Eastern Prom trail exists today.

The elevator stood several stories tall and two were along the waterfront. The first one burned, but when the one in the photo was torn down, the timber from it was used to build the Samoset Resort in Rockport.

The railroad is gone from this area with the exception of the Maine Narrow Gauge Railroad. A future plan to develop the area into a new neighborhood recently cleared another hurtle with the City of Portland and the project could begin later this year.
