In 1922 cars were still a new thing. They were cheap by today's prices, but still $500 was a lot of money. Without an old car to trade in, what did people do?  

Take a look at the above receipt from Ripley & Fletcher Ford in South Paris Maine. They've held onto this for 93 years!

The car sold is listed as a "Ford Touring Car" sold to Eliza Davis of West Paris for $503.85 with a credit of $100 for the trade in. Do you see what was traded? Take a closer look:

Yep. Two cows!

It's not the only time original owner Perley Ripley sold a car for cattle. He told the story of how he got stared by selling a car to a farmer in Andover Maine for a colt and two oxen.
