The un-official start of summer is here and that means that it's a big weekend for the drive-in movie theaters in Maine. Maine once had 39 drive-in theaters, but that number has dwindled to just 5. Still, it's a movie experience like no other. Here's what you can see this Memorial Day weekend at the drive-in in Maine.

In 2013, the Saco Drive-In on Route 1 was one of several drive-in theaters across the country who won an online voting contest put on by Honda to win a digital projector. Since movie studios switched to digital format only, it has been a financial burden for movie theaters to upgrade to digital. With that win, the Saco Drive-In is still going strong and showing these movies this weekend.

The Bridgton Twin Drive-In on Route 302 is one of the two-screen theaters in Maine. I remember seeing Pete's Dragon and Star Wars there in 1977. 40 years later and they've shown the new Star Wars: The Force Awakens and no doubt will have the new Pete's Dragon in August. Thursday nights are retro nights where they show classic movies from the 80s. You can get the full retro night schedule on their Facebook page.

Here's what's playing this weekend, including a triple feature on screen 1.

The Bangor Drive-In on outer Hammond Street in Hermon, closed in 1985 and for thirty years the screens remained standing until they were put to use again recently. Now it's a must-visit destination during the summer to catch a movie. This weekend is the perfect chance to catch these movies.

The Skylite Drive-in at 304 11th Ave in Madawaska has been around for 46 years up in The County. You really can't get much further north in Maine without being in Canada. They're opening for the season this weekend and showing Batman V Superman at dusk.

There are two other drive-ins in Maine not open on Memorial Day weekend.

One is the Skowhegan Drive-In on Route 201. They will be opening on June 3 and 4 showing Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2.

Pride's Corner Drive-In on Route 302 in Westbrook has not set a schedule for the 2016 season yet, but when and if they do, they will post it to their Facebook page.

The delay may be because they need to purchase a digital projector. A Go Fund Me page has been set up to try to help raise the cash they need to keep the movies on the screen.
