There's a new study that was released by the Pew Research Center that shows how much money a person needs to make in each state per hour to be able to afford the rent for a two bedroom apartment. How much is it in Maine and how does it compare with the rest of the country?

No matter where you look, it's not good. In Maine however you need to make $16.71 an hour to afford a two bedroom apartment. The minimum wage in Maine is $7.50. So you need to make more than twice the minimum wage to be able to afford the average two bedroom apartment.

It gets worse. Maine has the 8th largest gap in the country between the actual average hourly wage and the hourly wage you need to make to afford a two bedroom apartment. The average hourly wage in Maine is $10.39 per hour. Remember, you need to make $16.71 per hour in Maine to afford the apartment.

Single bedroom apartments aren't cheap either. There's no state in the county where a minimum wage worker can afford a one bedroom apartment working 40 hours a week without paying more than 30% of their income.
