After my mother lost her battle with cancer in 2005 I found something while cleaning out her apartment that shows just show how proud she was of me and my brother over the years. Every mom thinks the world of her children, but I was amazed that she had kept this for 28 years.

Back in 1977 my grandfather, my mother's father, had a heart attack and had to be hospitalized at Stephens Memorial in Norway. These were the days when children were not allowed to visit family in the hospital.

I remember vividly standing in the back parking lot of the hospital and waving to my grandfather through the window. I was just six years old. What I don't remember is writing this letter:

It's not the best scan so where's what it says:

Dear Grampa,

I love you.
I hope you feel better
I hope you will come
out of the hospital soon.
I was going to peek
in the window, but I
will call you instead.
Grammie is doing well,
I hope you are too.

 Love,
    Jeffrey

I don't remember writing this at all. Clearly though it meant a lot to my mother.

My Grandfather died of another heart attack less than a year later. My guess is my mom found the letter when she was cleaning out my grandparents home in Bethel or I was never able to deliver it and she kept it.

Either way, it just goes to show how much something like this means to a parent. I've started saving notes from my son too. I'll let you decipher it.
