A group of volunteer lawyers gave free legal advice last week at the Portland Public Library. You should have seen their eyes when I said I wanted to sue Maine.

Why do I want to sue Maine? To repeal the stupid 'tampon tax'. Tampons are subject to sales taxes in 40 states incuding Maine. For most states, tampons and pads are deemed a 'luxury item'. While that language is not used for the Maine tax, you can buy any kind of chip (potato, tortilla, Pringles!) and they are NOT taxed.

The Portland Public Library hosted Law Day to provide assistance to those who needed to talk about legal issues. Well, I'm sure they weren't expecting someone fired up to get rid of the 'tampon tax'...but that's what they got.

Stan Tupper from Frederick Quinlan Tupper and Adam Nyhan from Opticliff Law were fascinating and extremely helpful.

Although neither one thought they could take on my case, they had some great advice including:

  • Are you sure you want to sue?
  • Start a petition
  • Contact local legislators and get the ball rolling
  • Do your homework!

Ugh. Homework. But I'm committed to this cause and homework I shall do!

First, I'm working with Adam on getting a petition going on Change.org. I think this has women across the country and here in Maine fired up, and I believe we could gather a lot of signatures!

I have also contacted my local representative (Teresa Pierce (D) Falmouth). I shall see where that gets me.

I just wanted to let you all know that I'm dead serious about this and I will not stop until that tax is gone!

So, look for a petition soon to sign! Let's get rid of this stupid tax!
