I was gathering the news for the morning show, when I came across this story. I just couldn't get past it. I thought it was ridiculous and couldn't let it go....

These are 'sharps' boxes and are attached to the backs of the Big Belly solar trash cans at three parks in Portland. It's so that drug users can properly dispose of their needles and stop littering. City workers come around once a week to collect used needles left inside.

In the two weeks they have been up, they have collected one needle.

I'm sorry, and I'm no heroin user - but I'd bet money littering is not top of mind for them! I feel Portland is sincere in it's concern, but this seems completely misguided to me! Proper disposal of needles? For God's sake, people who aren't high throw their cigarette butts on the ground! You want drug users to throw away needles...properly?

I hate complaining about something that is trying to be done to help a big problem, but I find this plain ol' dumb.
