Mmmm, it smells okay? But is that food okay to eat after a power outage? Listen to the Maine CDC...

  • Food should be kept at 40 degrees. Try adding ice to your fridge and remember to keep that door closed as much as possible!
  • Your freezer should keep food good for a couple of days. After that, you can refreeze food if there are ice crystals or it's a little solid.
  • You might want to think about moving food into a cooler with ice. I try to just make my fridge a cooler at that point.
  • If your food has been stored for more than 2 hours in an area above 40 degrees - it's toss time. DON'T taste it to figure that one out. Go by the adage, 'When in doubt, throw it out!'
  • If you have more questions about food safety during a power outage, contact the USDA's Meat and Poultry hotline: 1-800-535-4555 (it's open Monday-Friday from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.).

I don't know what I am bummed out about more...no TV or that I JUST went grocery shopping...
