Is This Maine Tradition Dying?
I had never even heard of this until I moved to Maine. With the latest closing, is this going away?
After 77 years, Colonial Bowling Lanes in Westbrook is closing. Kevin Sparks has owned it for the last 12 years, but back taxes caught up with him. The new owners say that they will turn it into a warehouse.
I remember playing candlepin bowling for the first time. I had only played what I call, 'big ball' bowling. This looked like it would sooooo easy. As anyone can tell you, it is not!
Finding candlepin bowling is getting harder and harder in Maine. It's mostly played in Maine, Massachusetts, Vermont and New Hampshire.
In the Portland area, there are two alleys:

I am sorry to see Colonial Bowling leave Westbrook...I've been there many times and have really enjoyed it. Hell, back in the day I even challenged Meredith (yes, Meredith) and Jeff and kicked their butts there!
