Lewiston Mayor Robert Macdonald got some national attention with his want to publicize the names of welfare recipients. It split Mainers and started a fight across the country.

But it was too much of a hot potato for the Maine legislature, and no one sponsored his legislation. Without sponsorship, it can't move forward.

Macdonald said that he knew this wouldn't be a popular idea, but he wants the registry because he thinks it will cut down on fraud and 'make people think twice about applying for welfare.'

I agree that scamming the system happens and costs thousands of dollars and cheats those who really need the assistance. But publicly naming those on welfare? I find that shameful. Even if 10 are scamming the system, that one single mom who had no other choice...to put her name out there is just plain wrong.

What do you think?
