US News and World Report came out with a very important top 5 list about what NEVER to share with co workers!

We spend a lot of time with co workers. In fact, in some cases we spend more time at work than with our own family. Spending so much time with your fellow employees might make you want to share a lot about yourself. DON'T! According to Robin Madell, who has spent over two decades as a corporate writer, journalist, and communications consultant on business, leadership and career issues, here are the top 5 things to never share with anyone at work:

5 THINGS TO NEVER REVEAL ABOUT YOURSELF AT WORK:

  • Negative feelings about your job or colleagues: It's too risky with social media. You may want to complain and bitch, but it can get back to the wrong people and bite you in the butt!
  • Opinions that can cause controversy: This seems like a no brainer. Why talk about religion, or abortion? There will be upset people and in the worst case scenario - a lawsuit!
  • Health issues: Oh sure, you can say you are on a health kick, but as soon as you get into negative health issues - it makes things awkward. If you need to have that conversation, have it with your boss.
  • Relationship issues and family troubles: My God! What will we talk about? If you are always talking about how your home life is in shambles, you can kiss that promotion good-bye. It even works in the opposite direction. If your life is great, and you share tons of positive things, the key here is just a little. Keep in mind three little letters...T M I.
  • How much money you make: Big giant DUH! Not everyone makes the same amount of money. Get over it. If you want more money, work for it and work it out with your boss.
Now, not every work place is the same. A radio station is certainly different than a bank, and it's ultimately up to you what you share. But I have noticed that less is more - in almost every situation.
