The Olympic dreams of Maine native Emily Sweeney ended in disaster on the luge track in PyeongChang this week, when the 24-year-old crashed around curve 9 in her Olympic debut.

Sweeney was born here in Portland and went to school in Falmouth before moving to Connecticut.

In the stunning video, you can see Emily lose control of her run around the ninth curve of the track at the Olympic Sliding Centre, and it all went downhill from there. She started sliding down the track sideways, and hit both her head and ankles on the icy walls while she was still traveling at a high rate of speed.

According to the Portland Press Herald, Sweeney took several minutes to get up and walk away from the incident, but was able to get to the athlete's area for further assessment under her own steam.

Hopefully, Emily will make a full recovery and compete again at the next Winter Olympics in Beijing.
