‘Making a Murderer’ Season 2 Officially in Production, Netflix Confirms

Making a Murderer Season 2 Confirmed
Netflix

Initial outrage around the Steven Avery case chronicled in Netflix’s Making a Murderer appeared to have cooled (it was about 700 outrages ago), but it seems the story will indeed continue. Netflix has confirmed filmmakers Laura Ricciardi and Moira Demos have begun production of a second season, centering on new developments in the Avery and Dassey cases.

Where the two directors initially spent ten years documenting the accused crimes of Steven Avery and nephew Brendan Dassey, Netflix says new episodes will “provide an in-depth look at the high-stakes post-conviction process, as well as, the emotional toll the process takes on all involved.”

More specifically, it appears as if Avery’s new post-Making a Murderer Season 1 representation aided in determining focus for a second season:

The episodes will offer exclusive access to Avery’s new lawyer Kathleen Zellner and Dassey’s legal team, led by Laura Nirider and Steve Drizin, as well as intimate access to the families and characters close to the case.

Says Netflix:

Because of Ricciardi’s and Demos’ incredible vision, commitment and keen eye, audiences around the globe became completely captivated by the personal stories of Steven Avery and Brendan Dassey and the unique lens their experiences provide into the criminal justice system. We’re thrilled to be continuing our longstanding relationship with the filmmakers, and look forward to giving our global viewers eagerly anticipated updates on this story.

For those unfamiliar with the documentary, Making a Murderer follows the case of Steven Avery, a Wisconsin man convicted of a brutal assault and sent to prison for 18 years, only to be exonerated by DNA evidence. Soon enough into a public civil case for justice reform however, Steven found himself accused of the murder of young photographer Teresa Halbach, and subsequently railroaded through a lengthy trial under especially dubious circumstances, and apparent corruption at every turn.

There’s no telling yet exactly when the new episodes might premiere, but could Making a Murderer Season 2 prove as shocking and comprehensive as its predecessor?
