Almost a year and a half after the tragic loss of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 over Russia, the Dutch Safety Board has released a video (above) that explains in detail the exact circumstances surrounding the downing of the airliner and the deaths of 298 passengers and crew.

Conducted over several months by aviation experts from six different countries, the report is considered to be the definitive account of what actually happened. Key facts have been disputed by both Russian and Ukrainian military forces since the incident.

MH17 was destroyed as a result of the detonation of a warhead."

The computer-animated recreation explains how the aircraft was shot out of the sky by a military missile launcher, and torn apart at over 30,000 feet by the resulting explosion and hundreds of pieces of shrapnel.

In July 2015, one year after the incident, Malaysia proposed a United Nations resolution to set up an international tribunal to prosecute those suspected of being behind the downing of the plane. While the proposal gained a majority on the UN Security Council (11 countries voting for it, 3 abstaining), it was vetoed by Russia.
