The Portland City Council is scheduled to vote on a proposed 5-cent tax that would be applied to plastic bags at retailers on Monday night at City Hall, according to WMTW.

The Portland television news station reported Monday morning the council will hold a public hearing at 7 p.m. before voting on the proposed ordinance. The council is also scheduled to consider a ban on Styrofoam containers. If approved by the full Portland Council, the ordinance will take effect in July 2015.
