A sad day for fans of Eight is Enough and the world at large, as representatives of actor Dick Van Patten have confirmed news that the 86-year old passed away of unknown causes. The lifelong star was also known for his work in such Mel Brooks movies as Spaceballs and Robin Hood: Men in Tights.

Van Patten’s rep confirmed the loss, saying “I am sorry to report this sad news,” before adding “His family will not be doing any press at this time.” No cause of death has yet been confirmed, while the actor also leaves behind wife Pat Van Patten, as well as the couple’s three children: Nels, Jimmy, and Vincent.

Perhaps best known as Bradford family patriarch Tom on Eight is Enough from 1977 through 1981, Van Patten began his acting career early with a Broadway role at the age of 7. He would appear on the revered stages 27 more times throughout his career, even working as recently as 2011 with a role in TVLand’s Hot in Cleveland.

Best thoughts to the family, and fans of Dick Van Patten’s work. He will be missed.
