There will be vigils held in several cities all over the state this evening to honor the victims of the mass shooting in Orlando.

EqualityMaine, the state’s leading advocate for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender Mainers, released the following statement in response to the events in Orlando this weekend:

“We were shocked and horrified by the events in Orlando this weekend.  This was an act of terror and of hate that specifically targeted LGBT people,” said Matt Moonen, Executive Director of EqualityMaine. “Our hearts are with the victims, their families, and with those still fighting for their lives. Our community is hurting, and the vigils across the state tonight will enable us to come together to mourn those lost in Orlando.”

The leaders of upcoming Pride events in Portland and Bangor also said, “Pride Portland is saddened and stunned by this act of terrorism,” said Michelle Patrick, co-chair of Pride Portland. “We will continue to follow our mission statement, honoring our history and bringing community together. This tragedy is a reminder that we need to continue to do both. We will continue with our planned activities. We encourage the community to participate, honor and celebrate for those who no longer can.”
