Back in the 'good old days' of Maine winters if you needed to get somewhere you either walked, or shoveled your own way out. There were no snowplows until 1827 when Union Iron Works in Bangor developed a snowplow manufacturing plant owned by Donald Sargent. And Sargent Snowplows was born. Even though the snowplows had no heat, the company was a success selling plows throughout New England and as far west as South Dakota for over 100 years.

They also made 'snow rollers' that would flatten the snow on the roads which caused problems later in the spring.
