What is the Big Andrew? It's a collective community of waterman and volunteers, dedicated to supporting local families struggling with cancer through their love for the the ocean and the sport of surfing. The Big Andrew Foundation was founded in 2008 after 16 year old Andrew Gmelch, a good friend, son, brother and cousin died from acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

Andrew was an inspiring individual, dedicated to his family, friends, as well as living life to the fullest. The Big Andrew Foundation takes the same initiative towards the fight against cancer. Their mission is to provide a strong network of resources for patients and families that need it most while battling cancer. To support these individuals morally and financially to ease the burden of such a demanding disease.

In its second year, The Big Andrew Car Classic, a pre-lude to the surf contest, brings together the beautiful aesthetic of a bygone era of automotive design with community based fundraising. Showcasing only pre-1970’s automotives, this year’s event is estimated to showcase over 50 classic cars and is in walking distance of the picturesque Short Sands Beach in York Beach, Maine, a premier tourist destination with heavy foot traffic along the Maine seacoast.
