These 1960s Photos of Summer in Maine Are Awesomely Cheesy
Maine has been a tourist destination, but the tourists didn't come without some advertising. These vintage promotional photos from the 1960s show what cheese-o-licious fun a summer vacation in Maine looked like.
If you've ever looked at a catalog or sales flyer and noticed models posing for staged photos with products, you'll get the idea of what's happening in these photos.
This one is from the lounge at the Royal Anchor Hotel in Old Orchard Beach. It still exists as the Royal Anchor Resort. It's a safe bet the wood paneling has long been replaced. We hope.
This is a family enjoying the wonderful outdoors on the shore of Cobbosseecontee Lake in Litchfield. The woman in the foreground is wondering to herself, "Did I remember to bring the Wonder Bread for the kids' deviled ham sandwiches?"
This is at the coffee shop at the Holiday House Motor Inn in Scarborough. The '60s were all wood paneling and braided rugs. My grandmother had those same chairs which I think I still have stored somewhere for no reason whatsoever.
Here's an extended exposure photo of The Mt. Royal Motel in Old Orchard Beach. It's still there today, and doesn't look like it has changed much judging by this photo from their website.
At least the wood paneling is gone.
This is the cheesiest of the cheesy at the Royal Anchor motel in Old Orchard Beach. More Wonder Bread sandwiches, tall, fruity cocktails and a full size turkey on a TV tray table. Or is that a ham? Whatever it is, it's bound to be delicious sitting in the hot sun. Summer in Maine is the best!
After a long day of enjoying the summer in Old Orchard Beach, it's time to do some laundry at the Wagon Wheel Trailer Park. One guy just decided to wash the shirt and pants right off his back. I hope those are shorts.
