A car fire at the Waterboro Hannaford Supermarket on Wednesday night almost took the lives of two young dogs.

According to the York County Sheriff's Office, a passerby noticed a car in the Hannaford lot with its engine on fire and two dogs inside. He went into the store to try to find the owner while Captain Dan Bean of the sheriff's office worked on putting the fire out.

The unidentified passerby and Captain Bean were able to get the dogs, named Dyna and Bruno, out unharmed.  The owner of the vehicle came out and was unsure why the engine caught fire.

About $1000 damage was done to the vehicle and the dogs seem to be doing well, but it could have been a lot worse if it wasn't for the good samaritans who acted quickly to prevent a disaster.
