You've probably seen the bumper stickers proudly proclaiming "This car climbed Mt. Washington." When you drive up a 7.6 mile, steep, narrow mountain road that climbs over 6000 feet with no guard rails, you can't help but feel like you've accomplished something.

Mt. Washington is the highest peak in the Northeast at 6288 feet and the auto road to the top is something that anyone with a fear of heights would have nightmares about. With no guardrails, there's nothing to prevent your car from going off the road and down the mountain the hard way.

That being said, this road is probably one of the safest in the world. Since it opened in 1861, there have only been three deaths on the Mt. Washington Auto Road. There are some safety precautions before you make the climb though.

You need to drive up and down the mountain in low gear so your engine doesn't overheat from working so hard, keeping a speed of no more than 20mph and be aware of cars coming in the other direction. There is room enough for two cars to pass each other at all parts of the road, but this is not like a typical highway. Things will get tight, but there are plenty of turnouts along the way if you need to take a break.

If the drive isn't something you feel up to, you can take a guided tour and leave the driving to the professionals, or take a look at this video shot by Toby Witt of the entire climb from top to bottom.
