Would You Call The Police to Save a Dog?
It's getting HOT! Leave your dog at home. Things you may not have known about dogs and the heat. All dog lovers should read this.
I would totally call the cops. In fact, one hot day last summer I saw a little poodle in a car at the grocery store and I waited for the owner to come out and told them I was about to call on them. They just rolled their eyes at me, got in their car and sped off quickly.
This guy confronted the owner of this little pup when he came out of a store. The owner didn't even have the windows cracked on a very hot day. It's against the law in most jurisdictions to leave a pet unattended in a standing or parked vehicle that would lead to hurting an animal.
Would you call the police on someone who left their dog in a hot car? Would you open the door if it was unlocked to help? One man wrote a note and stuck it to the window of a car saying "I took your dog to the police dept. Leaving your dog in a car on a hot day is animal abuse. If you can't care for dogs properly, don't own one." Some states allow people to break in to save a hot pet. North Carolina passed a bill last year allowing people permission to use any "reasonable means" to save an animal from a hot car.
Here are some reasons why that bill isn't such a bad idea after all. Some of these facts surprised me and I thought I would pass it along to you.
-Dogs can only cool off by panting and through the pads in their paws. Therefore they get hotter a lot faster than humans.
-Even on what seems to be a cooler day, cars can be death traps. When it's 72 degrees outside a car's internal temp is 116!!!!!!!
-Sometimes it takes as little as ten mins for the temp to climb to deadly.
-Cracking the windows DOES NOTHING TO HELP. I had no idea on this one. It has little to no effect on a car's internal temp.
SYMPTOMS OF OVERHEATING IN DOGS:
-Panting
-Drooling
-Breathing problems
-Collapsing/loss of consciousness
-Seizures
If your an animal lover, please pass this along!
