Bizarre, Confusing Ending to Boston Red Sox Game at Fenway Park

It was a confusing, exciting, bizarre, wild ending to an extra innings game at Fenway Park last night as Red Sox Nation essentially got to celebrate a win twice.

Sitting in last place in the AL East, the Boston Red Sox opened up a home series at Fenway Park last night against the Minnesota Twins. With the game tied 2-2 after the Bottom of the 9th, the Twins scored a couple of runs in the Top of the 10th and put the Sox backs against the walls.

And that's when the fireworks started.

Alex Verdugo Questionable Walk-Off

After tying the game 4-4 with 0 outs and the bases loaded, a double-play from the Twins left runners on second and third with two down and Alex Verdugo stepping up to the plate.

Verdugo had two strikes against him when he took a swing at a ball in the middle of the strike zone and crushed it down the right-field line, looking like it was hooking foul to the right of Pesky's Pole (the nickname for the right field foul pole named after former Sox great Johnny Pesky, who always hooked homeruns around the pole).

In fact, the NESN commentators even called it foul at first, until a second or two later fans started erupting in cheers, the Twins' right fielder looked dejected, and the anthem for a Red Sox win, "Dirty Water" by The Standells, blasted throughout the Fenway Park speakers.

During the victory light show, the camera panned to the Twins manager who called for the umpires to review the play. And while the Sox bench emptied for a "did we actually just have a walk-off win or not?" half-celebration in the middle of the field, Verdugo walked around the field confused.

After a few minutes of review, the head umpire called the ball fair and the game over, which triggered Dirty Water and the victory light show to start once again inside of Fenway, and a full-out celebration by the Sox.

And also lead to Alex Verdugo dropping the f-bomb twice live on air during a post-game interview with NESN (the second of which you can even hear NESN broadcaster Tom Caron hilariously but annoyed say, "Come on, man" in the background.)

What a wild ending.
