The opening of Central Maine Healthcare’s Cancer Care Center is another chapter in my ongoing cancer journey.

The same staff that I’ve been seeing since I was diagnosed in 2010 and who treated my mother during her cancer battle, are all going to have the most modern facilities and tools available to them. The opening ceremony for the Cancer Care Center was May 12.

Everything about the new two-story, 52,000-square-foot facility is meant to make things easier for cancer patients and their families. All oncology services will be housed in one area, so patients don't have to navigate different areas of the Central Maine Medical Center's campus for care, and the design embraces natural light, open space, and growing plants to provide a comfortable, welcoming space.

In addition, they'll have two new state-of-the-art Varian linear accelerators critical for radiation therapy — that's the newest model, and there's only six Varian linear accelerators in the state. Of course, this new technology and facility will have the same caring, expert medical team that has made Central Maine Healthcare's oncology institute a top regional cancer referral center for years.

Getting a diagnosis of cancer is a scary moment for patients and their families. It’s a lot to take in, and having been in that situation more than once, I know that the new Cancer Care Center will be a comfort to all.

It’s the place where the most advanced technology, a healing environment, and world-class medicine meet. It’s a game-changer. To learn more, visit cmhc.org/cancer/cmmc-cancer-care-center.
