A New York based clothing retailer, whose stores only come as far north as Massachusettes, is about to open a new store right here in Portland, Maine. According to Maine Biz, Madwell hopes to open its first store in Maine in Portland's Old Port before the holiday shopping season.

Madewell is a brand purchased by J. Crew in 2004 that now caters to mostly women with denim clothing. Jeans are a popular item, but they also carry tops and tees, sweatshirts, dresses, pants, totes, and bags.

Maine's first Madewell will be located at 75 Market Street on the corner of Market and Middle, the former location of another clothing store, Rambler's Way.

How big a deal is this? Well, I mentioned to my girlfriend Michele that Madewell is opening a store in Portland and her eyes lit up like a Christmas tree. "What?" she said with a big smile on her face. She opened up her closet and showed me all the clothing she had from Madewell and needless to say, she was excited about the new store opening.

Her next question was "When do they open?" According to Madewell's website, they plan to open sometime this fall. Maine Biz reports that Madewell's hopes to be open in time for the holiday shopping season and will be on the ground floor of the 19th-century building.
