Last fall, construction on a new toll plaza in York began to allow vehicles to travel through E-ZPass lanes at highway speeds. The project, which cost $39 million should be completed in 2021.

But now, the Maine Department of Transportation, Maine Turnpike Authority as well as the New Hampshire Department of Transportation are teaming up on improvements of an 8-mile stretch from the Piscataqua River Bridge through the new toll plaza over the next few years at a cost of roughly more than $90 million, according to the Associated Press.

But, they say, it's going to take a few years. First up is working on the Piscataqua River Bridge, the article says. The construction will take about two and a half to three years and should begin next month.

Maine Transportation Commissioner Bruce Van Note assured motorists that during construction three lanes will be open in each direction on the bridge through peak hours, according to the article.

The AP reported that once all construction is done on the 8-mile stretch, Maine Turnpike officials say 1,800 cars will be able to pass through the plaza each hour, an increase of 57 percent.
