Unique 1935 Train That Ran From Portland, Maine, to Boston, Massachusetts, Arrives at Conway Scenic Railroad
On August 3 and 4, you'll have an opportunity to see a very unique train that ran from Portland to Boston starting in the 1930s.
The Conway Scenic Railroad is celebrating its 50th anniversary and added the art deco streamliner train named The Flying Yankee, which hasn't been on rails in decades.
The Amtrak Downeaster is a spiritual successor to The Flying Yankee, as both trains traveled between Portland and Boston. At one point, The Flying Yankee was renamed to The Mountainer when it traveled from Boston’s North Station to Portland, then over to North Conway over the Mountain Division line.
After passenger service ended, The Flying Yankee was on display at the Edaville Railroad in Massachusetts for nearly 35 years before moving to the Concord and Claremont Railroad to be restored (the project was never completed). The State of New Hampshire later purchased it for $1, and it was hauled by truck to Conway.
This is an amazing piece of history the will hopefully be restored to operating condition. My guess is that if The Flying Yankee becomes operational again, the Conway Scenic might run it as The Mountaineer, the name of their current excursion that goes through Crawford Notch.
If you want to see The Flying Yankee at the Conway Scenic, a ticket on the Valley train is all you need to have a tour this historic train.
