Honor System at Momo’s Cheesecake in Ellsworth Might End Because of Lack of Honor
There aren't a lot of businesses that work on the honor system. Let's hope this one can keep going.
Seven years ago Brenda and Andres Ledezma started selling cheesecakes out of their garage and on the honor system. Because you can leave money, their garage is open 24/7. Momo's Cheesecakes Bakery on 471 Main Street in Ellsworth is legendary. Not just because of the first-rate cheesecakes and fudge, but because of how much trust Momo (Brenda) puts in her customers.
But recently, Brenda has seen some thefts and if it continues, they might have to end this system. They posted their frustration on Facebook.
She told WMTW that with a new camera system, she can see who is stealing, what they are stealing, and how they are getting away with it. Like a young man in a black hooded sweatshirt,
He had three slices put on the table, he walked over to the money box, put one bill in, went back to his cakes and then backed up, and then opened the box and grabbed a bunch of change. So then he grabbed his cake and as he was walking out my husband was walking in, and he ran in the house and we checked the cameras, and sure enough he stole the cash and the cakes.
They have not made public any of the videos showing the theft, but enough is enough. The next time it happens, they will be putting up videos of the thieves. On Facebook, you can hear the frustration...
We do have your face on camera. Also, we just want to be fair in warning everyone that we have had to put better-quality cameras in!! We run on the Honor System!! This is NOT A FREE FOR ALL!! If you can not afford to pay for the products but you are hungry and need food, reach out to us. We’ll get you a meal. This is our livelihood!
Please visit and please pay. If you can't afford it, that's okay - maybe another time. But please, please, please don't steal their hard work without leaving money. Please don't ruin this beautiful bakery for the rest of us. Please...
