Another sign that summer is quickly approaching is the re-opening of New England's drive-in theaters.

We're getting word that one of the most well-known drive-ins in Central Maine has set an opening date.

According to a post on their Facebook page, the Skowhegan Drive-In Theater will open for the season on Friday, May 6th.

The first movie of the season will be the latest Marvel Cinematic Universe movie "Dr Strange In The Multiverse of Madness".

The Facebook post did explain that there would be some changes this year.

The post said, in part:

This is a single feature showing. There will still be double features for some shows, but we have noticed over recent years that very few people stay for the second feature, depending on the genre of movies. We’re trying this out as a single feature, and we appreciate your patience while we figure out what program works best for the changing nature of how people consume media.
Some items in the concession stand are not yet available this early in the season. This is due in part to limited supply from distributors, and also the near double cost of electricity this year. Freezers, grills and fryers take a lot of power to run. That said, we’ll still have movie theater staples like hot popcorn, cold soda, candy and more.

You should also remember that you can rent the Skowhegan Drive-In for private showings.

For many years, drive-ins had been on the decline.  A staple of the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s, in recent years, many people chose to watch movies in traditional theaters or at home.  Out of necessity, drive-ins did make a bit of a comeback during the pandemic.  But now, as the world returns to normal, we are seeing them begin declining again.  In fact, several New England drive-ins have made the decision not to open in 2022.

If you have not experienced a drive-in theater recently, I encourage you to see a movie at one.  It really is an experience.
