Update on the I-95 Bridge Replacement Project in Augusta, Maine
For the last few years, those of us who travel I-95 and/or Route 202 in the area around Exit 109 in Augusta have had to deal with the mess caused by the replacement of a bridge over the I-95.
Even though we should be used to how long it takes to complete construction projects (yes, we're looking at you Ticonic Bridge Replacement Project), most of us are all still surprised by how long it takes to complete projects like this.
The good news is that it is almost over.
According to a KJ article, the $30 million project, which started in 2023, should be completed by this spring.
The article goes on to say that the temporary bridge has been removed.
With the new bridge now in place, crews from Woolwich-based Reed & Reed have reopened the left turn lane onto Whitten Road. That’s the key turn for Hannaford, the Turnpike Mall area, and Hallowell.
The old bridge was pushing 70 years old and carried roughly 17,000 vehicles a day. And it was tired. Failing paint, rusting steel beams, worn-out bearings, cracked concrete, and an eroding slope had all become part of the problem.
The new bridge fixes all of that. It improves clearance over I-95 and adds sidewalks and a bike lane to one of Augusta’s busiest stretches of road.
