The “Emptiest” Place in Maine is the Ultimate Destination for Hunters & Campers
Maine is a rural state.
Let's face it, that is one of the main reasons why people have been vacationing here for centuries.
Unlike the urban centers of Massachusetts, New York, Connecticut, New Jersey, and many other states, Maine has wide open spaces. We've also got cool small towns, fresh air, and a wide variety of terrain. That makes the state perfect for people who love the outdoors.
If you are from one of those more developed states, even our bigger towns like Portland, Lewiston, and Bangor feel rural. Right? Well, the state gets way more rural than that!
The "Emptiest" Spot in Maine
So, where is the emptiest spot in Maine?
After doing some research, we are pretty sure that we found the "emptiest" place in the State of Maine. While it is not completely devoid of people, there are very few people that live there an absolutely no real settlements.
You have probably already figured out that we're talking about the Allagash.
Even though there is an actual town named Allagash (a very small town with less than 300 people living there), we are talking about the region.
This remote spot in Western Aroostook County and Western Piscatquis County is pure wilderness. While there are no real settlements, the place is accessible by a series of back roads.
The highlight of the area is the Allagash Wilderness Waterway., a series of interconnected lakes, streams, and rivers.
If you are planning to make a trip to the Allagash, it is suggested that you get a registered guide. Additionally, you can learn about the rules for camping and hunting in the area HERE.
