Even though people have been eating sandwiches for hundreds of years, the concept of the sub shop chain did not really take off until the latter half of the 20th century.

Now, they are everywhere.

Nearly every town, no matter how small, has at least one of the popular chains.  Some towns and cities are blessed with several sub-shop chains.

Popular chains include Subway, D'Angelo, Panera, Quiznos, and Firehouse Subs.

One of the most popular up and coming sub shop chains is Jersey Mike's.  The company was founded as Mike's Submarines in Pleasant Point, New Jersey in 1956, but has only recently expanded into many parts of New England.

Current CEO Peter Cancro started out as an employee of Mike's Submarines and, in 1975, purchased the shop from its founder.  In 1987, Cancro started offering franchises.  There are currently over 2,800 locations across North America.  Additionally, they reportedly have another 300 stores in the works.

The chain currently has 10 locations in Maine, 49 locations in Massachusetts, 17 shops in New Hampshire, 40 in Connecticut, and 12 in Rhode Island.

Jersey Mike's Purchased

According to Fox Business, the chain was recently purchased by Blackstone, an asset management firm.  It is estimated that the deal is worth about $8 billion.  A representative for Blackstone says it is hoped the sale will be completed by early next year.

The article explains that the goal of the acquisition is to help the chain accelerate its growth.

Cancro will reportedly stay on board to handle the day-to-day operations of the chain.
