While many businesses come and go in the blink of an eye, some are in business for so long that they have become iconic.

That was the case with Skowhegan's Island Dairy Treat.

Sadly, the ice cream stand that has served Central Maine families for generations, has closed for the final time.

According to an article in the KJ, the ice cream stand finished its 72nd season on August 31st and it will not reopen in the spring.

The dairy bar's owners have sold the property and the new owners have another idea in mind for the land.

The announcement of the closure, posted by the Curtis Family, was posted on the Island Dairy Treat Facebook page on Sunday.

In the post, they explain that they made the decision not to take the dairy bar equipment so that they could reopen the business in a different location.  The post explains that, while they could do it, reopening in a different location would not be the same.

The post goes on to say, in part:

We want to extend our sincere thanks to all of our friends, customers and summertime families for the 8 yrs that we owned and operated at the Island!
We appreciate all of our girls for the continued dedication to our community and to the history of the Island.

The article explains that, according to town records, the property is now owned by Joseph McGuire and Kathleen McGuire, of Connecticut.  There is no word on what the new owners plan to do with the property.
