The Development of Scarborough Downs

Scarborough Downs is quickly becoming one of the most exciting new areas in Scarborough. The former harness-racing property is being transformed into The Downs, a large community with new homes, businesses, restaurants, and places for people to gather. As the development continues to grow, more familiar Maine businesses are making plans to open there.

Some of the biggest additions include Market Basket, which is planning a new 80,000-square-foot grocery store, and InterMed, which is expected to open a new specialty-services and surgery center. The food and drink scene is also growing. The Allagash Bungalow Scarborough and Bite Into Maine are already open at 10 Market Street, giving people a reason to visit The Downs even as more of the development is still being built. Now, another popular Scarborough spot, Café Luna, is preparing for a big move to the Town Center.

Café Luna’s Big Move

Café Luna is currently located at 370 Route 1 in Scarborough and has become a popular local spot for smoothies, smoothie bowls, breakfast and lunch, and, of course, drinks like iced coffee, iced lattes, and matcha. The drinks, served in Café Luna’s recognizable cups, have become part of the café’s bright and fun style and are often featured on its social media.

According to the Press Herald, Café Luna plans to move its original Scarborough location to the ground floor of The Breakaway, a building in the Town Center at The Downs. The new location is expected to open in May 2027 and will be about 2,600 square feet, making it slightly larger than the current café. It will also have a garage-style door that opens onto a patio, creating more outdoor space for customers.

According to the Press Herald, owner Juliann Joy said another benefit of the move will be better parking, which has been a challenge at the current Route 1 location. The move gives Café Luna more room to grow while keeping it in Scarborough and placing it in the middle of a growing new community. With businesses like Café Luna, Market Basket, InterMed, Allagash, and Bite Into Maine becoming part of The Downs, the development is starting to feel like a new gathering place for Scarborough residents and visitors.
