Why Making Candy Apples is the Sweetest Fall Tradition in Maine
Fall is my absolute favorite season. When the air gets crisp, the leaves turn red, and my son transforms into a little goblin, it can only mean one thing, Halloween is here!
Last night, I got a call from my mom, who you all know as, Yiayia. She invited us over to her place in Greene for my son's second favorite meal: spaghetti.
She told us we were going to make candy apples, which is great and all, but let’s be real: my mom does way more fun stuff with Bentley.
It’s like grandmothers have a secret club where they love their grandkids more than their own children. I mean, I get it, Bentley’s cute and all, but I used to be cute too! She got 8 apples, all for Bentley.
Where’s my candy apple, MOM?!
We jumped into full fall mode making our special candy apples.
Not to mention, we always love going to Yiayia's house, there’s just something that Bentley always loves about rummaging through her stuff and having the best time that makes it special.
Last night was the ultimate fall visit. If you are searching for an affordable and memory-making activity to do with your kids or your grandchildren, follow Yiayia's lead and do candy apples!
It's so easy. You can buy a kit anywhere like Walmart or Hannaford or you can buy the ingredients yourself!
How to Make Yiayia's Candy Apples
You start by washing and drying your apples, then stick a wooden skewer or popsicle stick into the top of each one. That's a fun part for the kiddos!
In a saucepan, heat the candy coating mix from the kit over medium heat, stirring until it's melted and smooth. Once it's bowling at 230 degrees remove the pot from the stove and dip each apple into the candy coating, twirling to cover it fully.
After dipping set them on a parchment-lined tray to cool and harden!
The kitchen smelled like sweet caramel and cinnamon as we dipped our apples into the gooey goodness, letting it drip with yummy gooeyness. And we don't wait until the caramel fully hardens either, we love the gooey coating!
Bentley was all about adding as much caramel as possible, of course. It was messy, sticky, and chaotic, but in true Yiayia fashion, it was also a blast.
By the end of it, we had a tray full of sweet little masterpieces and sticky fingers to show for it!
The perfect fall night, full of messy sticky Snyder love.
