Whether it’s your first time on the ice or you’re heading out to grab a new pair of skates, winter is the perfect season to give ice skating a try.

I remember skating as a kid and having so much fun, minus the one time I fell and ended up with a bump on my forehead the size of an egg. Other than that, it was always a great time.

Ice skating is an easy way to get outside during the winter, spend time with family or friends, and stay active when it’s tempting to stay indoors. Getting fresh air this time of year is so important, and Maine has plenty of great places to lace up your skates.

Here in Augusta, you can skate at Williams Park or Mill Park. Both rinks bring back memories of growing up and skating at local parks, simple, fun, and a great excuse to get outside.

If you’re up for a short trip, The Rink at Thompson’s Pint in Portland is another great option. It’s a large rink with a mix of kids and adults, plus a beer garden and some really nice winter views, making it a fun spot to spend an afternoon or evening.

One of the best Maine winter experiences, though, is skating on a pond or lake. If you live on one, you can clear off the snow and make your own rink. My sister did this at her place on North Pond, and I’m already planning to grab new skates and head out there soon. Since it’s a shallow pond, the ice freezes quickly and stays smooth, making it perfect for skating. There’s nothing like gliding across the ice, surrounded by snow and fresh Maine air.
