Magical Unicorn Caterpillar Taking Maine by Surprise, Horn and All

For those familiar with the wildlife of Maine, you know there are certain creatures you could stumble upon and say, “What the heck is that?”

They capture your attention and you wonder why you’ve never seen it until now. Curiosity sparks and then you are fated to deep dive into Google to find out what exactly you are staring at.

This is what happened recently to Kristi in North Waterboro, Maine.

She posted a photo of the creature she found on the Maine Insects Group Facebook page. Once I saw it, I knew I had to share this little guy with you. Ladies and gentle-dudes, I introduce what I have dubbed the 'Unicorn Caterpillar!'

Kristi had comments rolling in quickly to this post with folks that are familiar with this caterpillar weighing in. I still can't get over that horn!

Its true name is the White-Lined Sphinx and will eventually turn into a moth! But the horn is so cool! According to Wisconsin Horticulture, the horn can be yellow or orange, often having a black tip. It's important to note that this is not a stinger, and the caterpillar poses no threat to humans

According to Wikipedia, the White-Lined Sphinx is also referred to as the "hummingbird moth." Not only does it look like a magical creature but once it turns in to a moth, it's wingspan can reach up to 3.5 inches, which is fast like a hummingbird. Some folks even mistake this little guy as a hummingbird once it's transformation is complete.
