Check Out How One Act in Lewiston, Maine, Made a Big Difference
I found a poignant reminder to do good for others today as I was scrolling on Facebook.
Lewiston Rocks is a community page where a lot of us residents weigh in on anything that has to do with the city of Lewiston, Maine.
A post by a man named Grady spoke to me because he experienced an unexpected act of kindness at work that left a big impression.
He wrote that while he and his crew were cleaning up a homeless encampment in Auburn near the train tracks, they faced the challenge of carrying debris roughly 200 feet to their parked dump trailer.
A young man from CSX, the railroad company, approached them with curiosity about what they were doing.
To Grady's surprise, the man kindly offered to help transport the trash bags and debris using his pickup truck, which was specially equipped to drive on the tracks.
At first, Grady thanked him but insisted that if he was taking this man away from any other obligation, not wanting to interrupt the man's duties, he didn't have to.
However, the CSX worker explained that he was at a standstill with his work and was happy to help them. Grady said in his post that he has been dealing with health issues recently and gratefully accepted the offer. At the same time, he only expected this man to help with a couple of loads, no more.
To his amazement, the man kept helping, and by the third pickup load, their dump trailer was full and ready for the landfill. Grady said thank you, and his thought was his help had ended there.
But after their lunch break, when they returned, the worker was waiting, ready to help again!
Despite Grady's repeated insistence that they didn’t want to take up too much of his time, the man still stayed and helped them clear the remaining trash in record time.
For Grady, this gesture of help was nothing short of a blessing and it reminded him how much even a small act of kindness can mean to someone.
He hopes the CSX worker gets the same generosity if he ever needs it.
