Newly Proposed Project Could Produce New Tallest Building in Maine
When it comes to Maine, we're known for so many awesome things. Outdoor recreation, world-class hunting and fishing, amazing lobster rolls and views of the rocky coast that you just can't get anywhere else.
One thing that Maine is definitely NOT known for, is our big and tall skyline. While Maine is home to some decently-sized buildings, we're not like a Boston or New York City. We just don't have the population density to justify such large buildings. But to be fair, us Native Mainers are cool with that.
However, a newly (sort of) proposed plan would bring a new 'tallest' building to the Pine Tree State. I say 'sort of' because this plan has actually been in the works over the course of many years. However, it now seems that it's closer to reality than ever before.
According to WGME 13, the plan would bring a whole new development project to the city of Portland, Maine. Portland is actually the home of Maine's current tallest building. However, the proposed new project would build one taller than that.
Channel 13 is reporting that the project, called Old Port Square, is still in the planning phase but would bring new buildings to the Middle/Exchange/Fore/Union Street area. It would be part of a project aimed at bringing more hotels, offices and restaurants to the area.
In addition to several new buildings, the project would include what would become the tallest building in Maine. However, a timeline for when all of this might begin has not yet been released.
Tim Soley, CEO of East Brown Cow President, said in part,
"Just in the last couple of years, we've had a couple of different James Beard Award winners, which is phenomenal for such a small town, so capturing that energy and that vision through the actual passion of the people who make up Portland is what it's about,"
