A beloved local eatery has been closed for more than two weeks, not because of renovations or staffing shortages, but because it simply ran out of water.

The well at Peace Love Waffles in Dover-Foxcroft, Maine recently ran dry, forcing the restaurant to temporarily shut its doors. Owner Michael Begley told WGME they’re in the process of having a new well drilled, a major upgrade from their original 80-foot well to a much deeper 320-foot one.

While most restaurants rely on municipal water, Begley says operating on a private well is part of the charm of being in rural Maine.

“That’s kind of part of us being out here,” Begley explained. “Out here, kind of in the middle of nowhere, we are on our own water system. And that’s something that we had to get approved by the town and everything like that.”

Despite the setback, Begley is optimistic. He says Peace Love Waffles expects to reopen this weekend with the new well fully operational  and plenty of water to go around.
