Maine Wildlife Park’s New Bobcat Officially Has a Name!
If you listened to our show over the last week, you know that we had pitched some names for the new bobcat at the Maine Wildlife Park. However, they didn't seem to go with our favorite suggestion of Bob 'Cat' Marley.
Instead, after asking visitors to vote, the park has announced that its new bobcat will be called Moxie. The name beat out two other finalists, Juniper and Acadia, in a public poll that drew nearly 1,000 votes. According to the park, Moxie received close to half of all votes cast.
Now that she has a name, Moxie is stepping into an important role. Park officials say she’ll help educate thousands of visitors each season about bobcats and their place in Maine’s ecosystem.
In a statement, the park encouraged guests to not only meet Moxie, but also take the opportunity to learn more about the species. That includes understanding how to tell bobcats apart from the similar-looking Canada lynx, as well as learning how wildlife biologists work to maintain healthy populations across the state.
Located in Gray, the Maine Wildlife Park is home to more than 30 species native to Maine. In addition to its animals, the park features walking trails, gardens, picnic areas, a visitor center and a small museum, making it a popular seasonal stop for families.
The park is open seven days a week from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with guests welcome to stay and explore the grounds until 6 p.m.
